Preview Screenshots on Mac Without Opening Them
By Roman Resenchuk,
To preview screenshots on Mac without opening them, keep them in CloudShots and press Space. CloudShots shows your screenshots in a panel at the edge of your Mac, and Space opens Quick Look on the one under your pointer, so you see it large without launching Preview or leaving your work.
CloudShots is a screenshot app for Mac, iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch that keeps every screenshot in one feed, and I build it in my free time. The reel above is the habit it replaces: double-click a file, wait for Preview, look, close the window, repeat.
Why previewing a screenshot costs more than it should
A screenshot lands on your Desktop with a name made of a date and a time. To see what it is, you open it. Preview launches, takes a window, takes your focus, and when you are done you close it and find your place again. Do that ten times while you are trying to find one screenshot and you have lost a few minutes and your train of thought.
macOS has Quick Look in Finder, which helps, but it needs a Finder window and a selected file. The screenshots you want are scattered between the Desktop, a downloads folder and whatever you saved last week.
How to preview screenshots on Mac without opening them, step by step
- Install CloudShots on your Mac and choose the folder it should watch, for example your Desktop.
- Take screenshots as usual. They appear in the CloudShots panel at the edge of the screen.
- Open the panel with its hotkey or from the menu bar.
- Point at a screenshot and press Space.
- Read it in the Quick Look popover, then press Space again to close it.
The panel is a single feed, so you scroll the way you scroll on a phone instead of opening folders. Arrow keys move through the rows, and Space or Return opens Quick Look on the row under the pointer, or on the selection.
What Quick Look gives you
Quick Look in CloudShots is one popover that you can resize, anchored to the panel so it stays beside your work. Next to the picture you get the actions you usually want next: copy the image, pin it to the screen, export it, edit it or move it to the Trash. It also shows the text recognized inside the screenshot and its tags, so you can read a long caption without squinting at a small image.
Pinning is handy when you need a screenshot on screen while you type: a pinned screenshot floats above your windows until you unpin it.
When this matters most
The preview habit pays off when you are comparing. You took four screenshots of a layout while testing, or five of a long chat, and you need to see which one is the right one. In a folder, that means opening each file in turn. In the panel, you point at one, press Space, read, press Space again and move on to the next. The whole comparison happens in the same spot on screen, and your editor never loses focus for long.
Screenshots from your iPhone arrive in the same panel
CloudShots syncs through your own private iCloud, so screenshots you take on the iPhone appear in the Mac panel too, and you preview them the same way. The page on how to sync screenshots between Mac and iPhone explains the sync. There is no CloudShots server in the middle: your screenshots stay in your private iCloud, and the text is read on your devices.
CloudShots does send diagnostics so crashes can be fixed, and they never include screenshot content. You can opt out in onboarding or Settings.
FAQ
How do I preview screenshots on Mac without opening them?
Keep your screenshots in CloudShots, open its panel and press Space on the one you want. A Quick Look popover shows the screenshot without launching Preview.
Does Quick Look in CloudShots work with iPhone screenshots?
Yes. CloudShots syncs screenshots from your iPhone through your private iCloud, and they appear in the same Mac panel with the same Quick Look.
Does CloudShots replace Finder's Quick Look?
No. Finder keeps its own Quick Look for files. CloudShots adds one for your screenshots, in a panel you open from anywhere, with actions like pin, copy and export beside the picture.
Where do my screenshots go?
They stay in your own private iCloud, and CloudShots has no server that stores them. You can download CloudShots and check it yourself.
