See iPhone Screenshots on Apple Watch: How It Works
By Roman Resenchuk,
To see iPhone screenshots on Apple Watch, install CloudShots on your iPhone and open it on your Watch. Your recent screenshots show up there as a read-only history, synced through your own iCloud. You keep taking screenshots on the iPhone exactly as before; the Watch only shows them.
CloudShots is a screenshot app for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch that keeps one screenshot history in sync, and I build it in my free time. The reel above is a small daily annoyance: the screenshot you need is on the phone that is somewhere else.
Why your screenshots are never where you are
A screenshot is the fastest way to keep something: a boarding pass, a door code, a map pin, an address a friend sent. You take it on the iPhone and it stays on the iPhone. The moment the phone is charging in another room, in your bag, or in a pocket you do not want to dig in, that information is out of reach. The Watch is on your wrist, but Apple's Photos is not built to be browsed there.
So you walk back for the phone, or you ask someone to read the number to you. Neither is a big problem. Both happen a lot more often than they should.
How to see iPhone screenshots on Apple Watch, step by step
- Install CloudShots on your iPhone and let it read your Screenshots album. It syncs them to your private iCloud.
- Use the same Apple ID on the iPhone your Watch is paired with, so everything shares one private iCloud.
- Take screenshots on the iPhone as usual.
- Open CloudShots on your Apple Watch.
- Scroll your recent screenshots on the wrist.
The Watch reads from iCloud directly, so it shows what the iPhone has already synced. The iCloud screenshot manager page explains how that sync works across your devices.
What the Watch shows and what it does not
Be clear about the limits, because a small screen is a small screen. The Apple Watch app in CloudShots is a read-only history. It shows your newest screenshots as thumbnails. You do not capture, edit, search or rename anything on the Watch, and text recognition and Smart names happen on the iPhone, iPad and Mac, not on the wrist.
That is the whole point of the design. The Watch is for the quick look: is this the right map pin, is this the screenshot with the door code in it. The real work stays on the bigger screens, where the same library is waiting. If you want the full picture of how the library reaches your Mac, read how to sync screenshots between Mac and iPhone.
Where your screenshots go
Your screenshots live in your own private iCloud, in a container that belongs to the app, not in your Photos library. CloudShots has no server that stores or syncs them: Apple's CloudKit does the storage, the sync and the push. The recognition work, such as reading the text inside a screenshot, runs on your device.
CloudShots does send diagnostics so I can fix crashes, and it never includes the content of your screenshots. You can opt out of diagnostics in onboarding or in Settings.
A normal day with it
You screenshot a restaurant booking at lunch. In the afternoon the phone is on a desk and you are walking to the meeting. You raise your wrist, open CloudShots and see the booking confirmation as a thumbnail, with the table and time in the picture. You did not move a file and you did not send anything to yourself.
FAQ
How do I see iPhone screenshots on Apple Watch?
Install CloudShots on your iPhone, then open CloudShots on your Apple Watch. The Watch shows your recent screenshots as a read-only history from your private iCloud.
Can I take a screenshot from my Apple Watch with CloudShots?
No. The Apple Watch app is read-only, so capture, editing and search happen on iPhone, iPad and Mac. CloudShots shows the Watch your newest screenshots and nothing more.
Does CloudShots upload my screenshots to its own servers?
No. Screenshots sync through your own private iCloud, and CloudShots has no server that stores them. Diagnostics never include screenshot content, and you can opt out of them.
Does it work on iPad and Mac too?
Yes. CloudShots keeps one library on iPhone, iPad and Mac as well, so the same screenshot is there on each. You can download CloudShots for all of them.
