How to Name and Find Every Screenshot on iPhone and Mac
By Roman Resenchuk,
Here is how to find old screenshots on iPhone and Mac: install CloudShots, let Smart names give each screenshot a name that makes sense, then type a word you remember from the picture. Search reads the text inside every screenshot and highlights the match. Smart names run on your device and need Apple Intelligence.
CloudShots is a screenshot app for iPhone, iPad and Mac that reads, names and syncs your screenshots, and I build it on weekends. I made it because I could never find the screenshot I needed.
You know the pile. Hundreds of screenshots, every one named by a date and a number, and the one you need is somewhere in the middle. Scrolling is slow, and the filename tells you nothing. The video shows the fix in two steps: each screenshot gets a name that says what it is, and when you only remember a word, you type that word and the screenshot comes up with the match highlighted.
How to name and find screenshots, step by step
- Install CloudShots on your iPhone and give it Full Access to Photos, so it can read your Screenshots album.
- Turn on Apple Intelligence in Settings if your device supports it. Smart names need it.
- Take screenshots as usual. CloudShots reads each one and gives it a Smart name, such as the name of the cafe menu you captured.
- Open the search field and type a word you remember from the picture, for example matcha.
- Open the result. The match is highlighted in the image.
On the Mac the steps are the same, and the search guide shows how text search works in more detail.
Naming runs in the background, so you never wait for it. Search does not need Apple Intelligence: it reads the text in every screenshot on any supported device.
Where the screenshots go
The AI runs on my device. Smart names are written by Apple's on-device model, and there are no CloudShots servers in that step. Your screenshots stay in your private iCloud, and the iCloud screenshot manager page explains how they stay in step across your devices. The Mac and iPhone sync guide covers the sync itself.
What changes in a normal day
You stop scrolling. A receipt is named like a receipt, a map pin like a place, a cafe menu like a menu. When the name is not enough, you type a word you remember and the screenshot opens with the match highlighted. Nothing is filed by hand and nothing is renamed by hand.
Why a name beats a date
A screenshot taken by the system is named by the moment it was taken. That tells you when, but you almost never remember when. You remember what was on it: a Wi-Fi password at a cafe, a boarding pass, a line from a build log, the week's schedule. A Smart name puts that memory into the list itself, so the right screenshot stands out while you scroll, before you even search.
Search covers the other half. Some screenshots are full of text you only half remember, like a long menu or a terminal log. You type one word, and CloudShots finds every screenshot where that word appears in the image, not only in the name. The match is highlighted in the picture, so you see at once why it came up.
Together they turn a camera roll of near-identical thumbnails into a library you can read. On the Mac the same library sits in a panel at the edge of the screen, so a screenshot you took on the iPhone is a word away while you work.
Free and Pro
Smart names are free on every plan, on devices that support Apple Intelligence. Free syncs and searches your whole library and opens the newest 30 screenshots; Pro opens the rest.
FAQ
How do I find an old screenshot on iPhone?
Open CloudShots and type a word that was in the screenshot. It searches the text inside every screenshot and highlights the match in the image.
What are Smart names?
Smart names give each screenshot a name that makes sense, written by Apple's on-device model. They need Apple Intelligence on a supported device.
Does the AI send my screenshots to a server?
No. The AI runs on my device, and CloudShots has no server that stores your screenshots.
Do I need Pro for Smart names or search?
No. Smart names and search work on the Free plan. Free opens the newest 30 screenshots; Pro opens the rest.

You're taking screenshots wrong. Finding them again is the hard part. Smart names give each shot a name that makes sense. So I just type matcha and there's the cafe menu. The AI runs on my device. No servers. Download on CloudShots.app.
