How to Rename Screenshots Automatically on iPhone and Mac
By Roman Resenchuk,
To rename screenshots automatically on iPhone and Mac, let CloudShots do it. On a device with Apple Intelligence, CloudShots gives every screenshot a short name that says what it is, like "Boarding pass DPS" or "Cafe Wi-Fi password", instead of "Screenshot 2026-10-12 at 14.03.51". I call this Smart names.
CloudShots is a screenshot app for iPhone, iPad and Mac that reads, names and syncs your screenshots, and I build it on weekends. Taking a screenshot is easy. Finding it again is the hard part. A list of dates tells you nothing, so you scroll and open one picture after another. A real name is something you can read at a glance and type into search.
I wanted names for my own library first. Boarding passes, receipts, Wi-Fi passwords, a calendar from a meeting, a terminal log from a late build. Renaming them by hand never happened, and a folder full of dates is no better than no folder at all. So CloudShots now names them for me, and the video shows the moment it happens: a row called "cloudshots_20261…" becomes "Boarding pass DPS", and the next becomes "Cafe Wi-Fi password".
How Smart names work
CloudShots first reads the text inside every screenshot with Apple's Vision framework and recognizes what is in the picture. Then Apple's on-device language model writes a name of two to five words from that text, those tags and the image. The date never goes into the name, because the date is already shown next to it.
The name is written on your device. Nothing is sent to a server to name it.
How to rename screenshots automatically, step by step
- Install CloudShots on your iPhone and give it Full Access to Photos, so it can read your Screenshots album.
- Make sure Apple Intelligence is turned on in Settings. Smart names need iOS 26 or macOS 26 on a device that supports Apple Intelligence.
- Let CloudShots import. Each screenshot is read and named in the background, and new screenshots are named as they arrive.
- On the Mac, open CloudShots and choose the folder it should watch. Your Desktop is preselected.
- To see progress, open Settings, then About, then On-device AI. It shows the screenshots being named and how many are still waiting, and it can name your library again.
If Apple Intelligence is not available, Settings explains why: the device is not eligible, it is turned off, or the model is still downloading.
What the names are good for
A name makes the feed readable, and it is searchable like the text inside the picture. Typing "boarding" finds the boarding pass by its name and by the words on it. The search guide covers search in more detail.
Names travel with your screenshots through your private iCloud, so the iPhone and the Mac show the same name. The Mac and iPhone sync guide explains how.
What a good name looks like
A Smart name is short, plain and specific. It says what the screenshot is and, where the text allows, the one detail that sets it apart: the airport code on a boarding pass, the cafe on a Wi-Fi card, the shop on a receipt. It never repeats the date or the app. When a screenshot has little text, the name leans on what is in the picture instead. When the model cannot write a good name, the screenshot keeps its date name until it can.
What stays on your device
The text recognition and the names are made on your device. Your screenshots, their text and their names sync only through your private iCloud, never through a CloudShots server, because there is none that holds your screenshots. I do collect crash and usage diagnostics, and you can turn them off in the app. Diagnostics never include a screenshot, its text or its name.
Free and Pro
Smart names work on the Free plan. Free syncs and searches your whole library and opens the newest 30 screenshots; Pro opens the whole history. The download page has CloudShots for iPhone and Mac.
FAQ
How do I rename screenshots automatically on iPhone?
Install CloudShots, give it Full Access to Photos and turn on Apple Intelligence. Every screenshot in your Screenshots album gets a Smart name in the background, and new ones are named as you take them.
Can I rename screenshots automatically without Apple Intelligence?
Not with Smart names, because the names are written by Apple's on-device model. Without it, CloudShots still reads the text and objects in every screenshot, so search works the same.
Does it work on the Mac?
Yes. The CloudShots Mac app names screenshots from the folder it watches, and names made on either device sync to the other through your private iCloud.
Is my screenshot sent anywhere to be named?
No. The name is written on your device, and the screenshot stays in your private iCloud.
