Free Up Screenshot Space on iPhone and Mac After iCloud Sync
By Roman Resenchuk,
To free up screenshot space on iPhone and Mac, let CloudShots confirm each one is safe in iCloud, then remove the original. CloudShots is a screenshot app for iPhone, iPad and Mac, and its Free Up action moves synced originals to Recently Deleted in Photos or to the Mac Trash.
Screenshots pile up in Photos and on my Desktop. A boarding pass, a receipt, a chat I wanted to keep, a terminal log from a late build. Each one is small, and together they take real room on a phone and a messy Desktop on a Mac. I built CloudShots on weekends to pull all of them into one feed, and the last step is the one this post covers: getting the space back without losing anything.
Why screenshots eat your storage
A screenshot is a full-resolution image, and it stays in Photos or in your Mac folder until you delete it. Most people never do, because deleting a screenshot you might need later feels risky. So the pile only grows: the same screenshots sit in Photos, on the Desktop and, if you sync them, in a second copy somewhere else.
The fear is reasonable. Deleting an original is only safe when you know a good copy exists. That is the problem Free Up solves: it offers an original for removal only after the screenshot is confirmed in your private iCloud.
How to free up screenshot space, step by step
- Install CloudShots and import your screenshots. On the iPhone, give it Full Access to Photos so it can see your Screenshots album. On the Mac, choose the folder it should watch; your Desktop is preselected.
- Let them sync. Open Settings in CloudShots and wait for the upload counter to confirm everything is in iCloud.
- Tap Free Up Your Photos on iPhone or iPad, or Free Up Your Mac in the Mac settings.
- Read the green checkmark, which states how many screenshots are confirmed synced, then confirm the dialog.
- The originals move to Recently Deleted in Photos, where they sit for 30 days, or to the Trash on your Mac. The space comes back once you empty it.
Once everything is in iCloud, CloudShots also shows a small hint card that offers Free Up, so you do not have to remember to look. The free up screenshot space guide walks through the same steps with the exact screens.
What stays safe
Free Up removes the original, not the screenshot. The picture stays in your CloudShots history, and you can still open it, search it, edit it and export it on every device. A deleted original is recoverable: Photos keeps it in Recently Deleted for 30 days, and the Mac keeps it in the Trash until you empty it.
CloudShots also refuses to offer some things at all:
- A screenshot that is still uploading, because it is not yet confirmed in iCloud.
- A Mac capture that only synced down to your phone, which is never offered for deletion from your Photos library.
- Anything on your Mac outside the folder you granted, including CloudShots' own captures.
CloudShots never deletes anything from your Photos library or your Mac folder on its own. Every removal waits for your confirmation.
What stays on your device
CloudShots has no servers that hold your screenshots. They sync through your own private iCloud account, and the text recognition that makes them searchable runs on your device. I do collect crash and usage diagnostics, and you can turn them off in the app. Diagnostics never include a screenshot or the text in it. The Mac and iPhone sync guide explains how screenshots travel between your devices.
Free and Pro
Importing, syncing and search are free, and Free opens the newest 30 screenshots. Clearing originals in bulk with Free Up Your Photos and Free Up Your Mac is part of Pro. On every plan, the Delete dialog offers Move to Trash and Delete from Photos (Folder on Mac) for a backed-up screenshot, so you can remove one at a time without Pro. The download page has CloudShots for iPhone and Mac.
FAQ
How do I free up screenshot space on iPhone?
Import your screenshots into CloudShots, wait until the upload counter shows they are in iCloud, then tap Free Up Your Photos in Settings. CloudShots moves the synced originals to Recently Deleted.
Is it safe to delete screenshots from Photos after they sync?
Yes, when each one is confirmed in iCloud first. CloudShots offers only confirmed screenshots, keeps every one in its history, and moves the original to Recently Deleted or the Trash.
How do I free up screenshot space on a Mac?
Choose the folder CloudShots watches, let it sync, then open the Mac settings and click Free Up Your Mac. The originals go to the Trash, and the space returns when you empty it.
Do I lose the screenshot from CloudShots too?
No. Free Up removes only the original in Photos or your Mac folder. The screenshot stays in CloudShots, where you can open, search, edit and export it.
Do I need Pro to free up space?
Bulk Free Up is a Pro feature. On every plan, CloudShots can still delete one backed-up screenshot and its original from the Delete dialog.
