How to Copy Text From a Screenshot on iPhone
By Roman Resenchuk,
To copy text from a screenshot on iPhone, open the screenshot in CloudShots and tap Copy under the recognized text. CloudShots reads the words inside every screenshot on your iPhone, iPad and Mac, so a password, an address or a recipe is ready to copy without retyping it.
CloudShots is a screenshot app for iPhone, iPad and Mac that reads, organizes and syncs your screenshots, and I build it in my free time. The reel above starts with the moment everyone knows: a password on a screenshot, and your thumb retyping it one character at a time.
Why text trapped in a screenshot is annoying
A screenshot is a picture. The words in it, a network password, a street address, a coupon code, are pixels, not text. You cannot paste pixels into a login field. So you flip between the screenshot and the field, memorize six characters at a time, and get the zero and the letter O wrong.
It gets worse with longer text: an ingredient list from a video you will never find again, a block of terminal output, an email address. Retyping is slow and it fails in exactly the places that matter.
How to copy text from a screenshot on iPhone, step by step
- Install CloudShots on your iPhone and let it read your Screenshots album.
- Take screenshots as usual. CloudShots reads the text of each one in the background, on the device.
- Open the screenshot you need from the feed.
- Find the recognized text under the picture and tap Copy.
- Paste it where you need it.
For the data people copy most, passwords, codes, emails, phone numbers and addresses, CloudShots also lists them separately so you can tap the one you want instead of selecting a whole block. If a screenshot contains a table, Copy offers the table as tab-separated values.
Text that stays searchable too
The same recognized text powers search. Type one word you remember and CloudShots finds every screenshot where it appears in the image, not only in its name. The guide to finding text in screenshots walks through it. So the screenshot you cannot find and the text you cannot copy are the same problem, and one feature fixes both.
Where the reading happens
The text is recognized on your device with Apple's Vision framework. It does not need Apple Intelligence, and no CloudShots server takes part: your screenshots and the text read from them sync through your own private iCloud, which the iCloud screenshot manager page describes.
CloudShots does send diagnostics so crashes can be fixed, and they never include screenshot content or recognized text. You can opt out in onboarding or Settings.
A few places this earns its keep
Copying text out of screenshots sounds small until you list where it comes up. A tracking number from a delivery notification. A promo code from a story that disappears. A recipe's ingredient list you want in a shopping note. A hotel address you need in Maps. A one-time code that a friend photographed for you. In each case the information already exists as characters somewhere; the screenshot just froze it as a picture, and reading it back is the job.
Limits worth knowing
Recognition is good, not magic. A blurry screenshot, tiny text or an unusual font can produce a wrong letter, so check a password before you rely on it. The text you copy is what was read from the picture, not a promise that every character is right.
FAQ
How do I copy text from a screenshot on iPhone?
Open the screenshot in CloudShots and tap Copy under the recognized text. The words were read on your iPhone, so you can paste them straight into any app.
Does CloudShots need Apple Intelligence to read text?
No. Text recognition uses Apple's Vision framework on your device and works without Apple Intelligence. Smart names, which write short titles for screenshots, are the part that needs it.
Is my screenshot text sent to a server?
No. CloudShots reads the text on your device, and it has no server that stores your screenshots. Diagnostics never include screenshot content and can be turned off.
Can I copy a password or an address without selecting everything?
Yes. CloudShots lists passwords, codes, emails, phone numbers and addresses it finds, so you can tap one and copy only that. Download CloudShots to try it.
